Search engine optimization, or SEO, has changed considerably since it began in the mid 90s. Back then, search engine algorithms were not nearly as sophisticated as they are today. Here are the top 5 SEO practices that no longer work like they used to.
Relying on Metatags
Search engines stopped relying on metatags to determine page rank years ago. Webmasters and SEO providers often packed metatags with keywords in order to gain exposure, but today’s search engines rely mostly on visible text. Title metatags and description tags, however are still good for helping search engines navigate you content more easily, but in terms of SEO, there are other things you should probably be focusing on.
Purchasing Links
Buying links is becoming less and less effective in terms of SEO, as Google and other search engines are working to develop more sophisticated algorithms that can identify purchased links and nullify their effect on page rankings. Google is also employing thousands of analysts whose job is is to sift through result pages and flag purchased links.
Duplicate Content
There are a lot of webmasters today who still rely heavily on duplicate content, using the exact same stuff on different sites to increase page view. Google has been known to ban websites outright that rely too much on this method.
Keyword Cramming
Keyword cramming used to be a very simple and largely effective method of improving your page rank. However, it resulted in highly unreadable content for the actual users that were ending up on these sites. For this reason, search engines are penalizing the overuse of keywords in written content.
Swapping Links
For the same reason that purchased links are not a reliable reflection of a site’s value, swapped links likewise fail to do the same. Using business listing services is another way that could get you penalized if you’re not careful. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t swap links with sites that could be relevant and useful to your users, but swapped links will not increase your rankings the way organically acquired links will.
