There is no such thing. Think about it for a minute. If there was, don’t you think Google would notice when a website shot to the top of the search ranking when no other criteria the algorithm looks for are met? Have you heard the saying, “Easy come, easy go?” In the world of search marketing, just like life, there is no shortcut.

As always, the fastest way to the top is with a map. Just as in the pioneer days, if you were heading across the country in a wagon train the quickest way to end up in trouble was to take a “shortcut.” If you want to get somewhere, look for someone that has gone there already. In the Military or Police Academy, every instructor teaches a topic they knew personally from experience. You don’t want to learn to swim from a person that has never been wet.

The same is true for SEO, Search Engine Optimization. In order to succeed you have to build a user friendly website that provides meaningful, relevant information that serves a purpose. Have a plan of what you want to get across to your visitor. Lead them to the action you want them to take. Use a structure that is easy for your visitors both human and Search Spiders to follow and digest. Use content that establishes your sites value that your users will want to share with others.

It sounds simple however if you follow this method, no Search Engine is ever going to have a problem with your site. Building like this takes time, planning and effort. But the long term benefits will be sustainable. Shortcuts never are and the real downside is they can get you booted clear out of the search results. For my business and that of my customers, that just is not an acceptable risk.

That being said, are there websites that rank well even though they ignore the guidelines set forth by the major search engines? Yes. How do I reconcile that? I don’t work for a search engine. I promote websites that want to rank well on search engines while adhering to the guidelines.

I know that Search Engines have set the rules and even though it may seem unfair they will enforce them as they see fit. Here’s an example that may demonstrate the point. There a speed limits posted on most roads across the country. But there is no way there are enough police officers to catch every speeder. Now you can decide to speed and risk either the accident the limits were put in place to avoid or get a ticket that will make your insurance more expensive or you could follow the limit and have a better chance of getting where you want to every time.

The Search Engines are always working on improving their techniques for discerning guideline violators. They occasionally implement a large portion of new programming that causes Search Optimizers to scramble when the search results suddenly change dramatically. If you tell them that you will be writing in your blog weekly, don’t let them down. Your readers are what makes your blog successful. You may not get this at the start, you’ll have few readers at the beginning, but you’ll gradually build a readership and see other people checking out your blog.

Perhaps you not planning on telling your readers how often you’ll post to your blog, that’s OK just remember to post regularly. However, think about this, if you were reading a blog on a weekly basis, and you expected to see the blog that you like to read updated at least once a week, you would be very disappointed to find out that it wasn’t.

Yes things happen and you might not always be able to post when you said you would, and that is fine let your readers know why (this builds rapport), but if you miss week after week you’ll can hurt your credibility and lose readers.

While you’re working on your readership base, and trying to gain readers, you are going to find that commenting on blogs that are relevant to yours will surely help.

Find a blog on the same topic as your own, or perhaps a related topic and leave comments on them, you can also leave a track back to your blog postings so people will comment on your own blog.

Doing so will probably give someone else the urge to track back to your blog, which will be good for it as well.

Commenting on blogs that get many comments will make yours be seen by those interested in that market. You’ll gain traffic and readers that way, and it is easy as well as free.

There are a great deal of conventions to follow in layout and design.

The first big mistake that many fall for is to design a site for a particular niche, creating a site that is visually different from all others in that category merely to stand out from the crowd.

It never works. Use colour and visual clues commonly associated with that category. For instance, if you are designing for a theatre then use images of curtains and wooden floorboards; if you are putting together a site for a book club then have obvious images of books. Remember, obvious is good.

Colour convention too needs to be observed with pink and purple for baby-orientated sites; green for environment and yellow for young children’s sites as just a few examples.

Colour is important as well on certain page elements. All links should be blue and underlined. This is true for all the search engines and it is ingrained in our daily user experience. You can’t reinvent the wheel, so don’t even try.

As for layout, always place a search box in the top half of the page. A sizeable minority of users consistently always use the search facility to navigate around a site; and a logo that links to the homepage is a must for every contemporary website. This is one convention that has come into common use over the last few years.

Always have a contact form within easy access of the user, preferably as a link in the main menu. Not only this but put the address and other contact information in the footer. This could be a legal requirement for charities and certain types of businesses. Like a link to the homepage on your logo, users have now come to expect this information in this area on every site.

You need to be able to describe just what your website or business is in one paragraph. This then needs to be at the very least placed in a prominent position on the home page, and preferably on every page; although failing that a tagline of between 3 to 8 words will suffice.

Spacing and distance between items on a page and in particular heading, paragraphs and lines of text are everything. Never, ever present blocks of text which are smaller than 12px as anything beneath this size is uncomfortable to read.

Fitting into this need is the grid layout. Although grids are fairly new to online design no self-respecting web designer would tackle a job without using one.

Above are just a few web design conventions. There is enough in existence to fill a book but these are some of the important ones.

Remember, we need a triumph of function over design. Don’t let your creativity dictate your output; follow the rules and guidelines already established.

They are not depending on search engines to help them find what they need. The friends they are making online give them recommendations. According to an iProspect Search Engine User Attitudes Study of 1,649 people, 56.3 percent of the participants use search engines at least once a day and 56.7 percent use the same search engine. Among the participants, 81.7 percent responded that they will try a new search if they haven’t found what they are searching for within the first three pages. It was also found that the younger the internet browser, the more likely it is to get past the SERP (search engine results page). This number isn’t surprising, as the older population have been slower to adopt technology than the younger generations. Also, male browsers are more likely to go past the SERP than females.

The study also showed that the search engine used can play a factor in the type of results they found relevant. Google and Yahoo! users engaged with natural search as a more relevant result to their activities. Users who used MSN found that paid search advertisements were more relevant to their search. AOL users found both natural and paid search to be equally relevant. As MSN transitions to Bing, we could see this behavior change dramatically.

Gender also had its role to play in search. Both men and women favor natural results. However, 43.1 percent of female participants responded to paid search as relevant, while only 34.6 percent of of men found paid search results to be relevant to their search. Education and employment also factored in to behavior and preference. The more educated and employed someone was, the more they favored natural search results as a relevant solution to their search. Non-college graduates and unemployed participants favored paid search.

When considering the variables of your SEO campaign, take in consideration your target audience. Are they more male or female, educated or unemployed, older or younger? These will all play a role in your decision-making process when considering natural search versus paid search. Picture if you can the starting line, there is the hare with a huge sack load of money, money that he intends to give to anyone who will visit the site while on the run to that finishing post. The poor old tortoise has only got his soap box, knowing that he will have to do a lot of talking to people, asking them to support his site (by links) and by convincing them that the site is worth visiting in the first place.

Worse still for the tortoise, he cannot take the shortest path to the finishing line, as he will have to go out of his way to visit as many other people (sites) as possible in his quest for support. Plus to make matters even worse, he knows that even when he does get ’support’ for this site, it will take the umpires (in this case the Search Engines) quite a time before they will even ‘notice’ this support, this making his climb to the front page of the listings and his goal of getting a good ROI on his labours even longer.

It is no surprise therefore that when the hare races off, the visits to his site pour in just as fast as he can throw the money out to people, but wait, is this really the idea, the way to success? Surely you have to make sure that the right person is being given the money and visiting the site? Asking these questions (in the SEM world this in part equates to choosing the right key phrases and writing the right adverts) slows the hare down a bit, but he is not worried as he knows that the tortoise is going to have the same sort of problems.

The tortoise’s journey is, as you can see much slower, he has a longer path to take and do a lot of work to get people to notice him and his requests for support, he even has to make sure that the words (key phrases) he uses (in the SEM world this equates to those on each of his web pages) are used in the just the right way, as otherwise he knows that the umpires will disallow his gains (he could be accused of cheating or ’spamming’ in SEO terms).

As you can see, with all this work to do, it takes a long time before the pages that the tortoise is trying to promote to get onto the front page of Google, whilst the hare has had his pages listed on the front page ever since the race started, but he has gone through a lot of money ‘buying in’ those visits and it took longer to get to the end than he thought it would too.

So who was the Winner?

Unlike the fable, in the SEM world, the winner is not so certain, PPC can work very well indeed (when managed properly). But however successful the PPC campaign is, it will in virtually all cases not be as good at converting visitors to buyers as a well constructed Organic campaign. So while there may be lots of visits to a site using PPC, they may well end up like the hare, i.e., a bit short of cash!

The morale of the story?

By all means, do use the ‘hare’ (PPC) approach, but be aware of the dangers of PPC, always remember that those that click on PPC ads do not seem to be so committed to purchase or enquire as those who click on any organic listings. So go for PPC by all means, but don?t please don?t forget the good old tortoise, after all he did win in the original race?
