Tired of SEO Theories and Algorithms: Try Blogging

Blogging | Posted by admin
Mar 02 2010

Most of the local business owners, who I know, still don’t have a web presence -for a combination of reasons. Many business owners are from my age group and don’t feel comfortable setting up a website. So, they pay somebody else to do it or it never gets done. There are a multitude of reasons to avoid launching your business on the web, and all of them are “lame excuses.”

As I travel around town, I get to hear all the excuses. “I’m too old,” “Our business isn’t the Internet type,” and “I don’t know HTML.” You can tell everybody else those excuses, but do you want to grow your business or not? The vast majority of small
businesses fail, and the Internet is the cheapest form of advertising available.

If haven’t launched a website or , you are delaying business marketing progress for nothing. Take a computer class, learn from your kids, or learn from your grandchildren, but start as soon as possible. Perhaps, your grandchild can earn some money teaching you how to make even more money.

Blogs are to start with, since you don’t need to have any HTML knowledge. You can also go to Blogger, and get a free . It might take you 10 to 15 minutes to set up and start posting information right away.

Some website hosts work like that too, but let’s assume you have a site of some kind. Did you know your website host might have a feature built in, at no extra charge? If you have this feature, you can easily build a commercial .

For a small business, with a website and commercial , you should be able to establish your natural search engine rankings. Sometimes, these are called “organic rankings” and you don’t have to pay a penny for them. It may take a few months or more to establish yourself, and you should make regular posts.

For optimum results, your regular posts can be daily, a few times per week, or once a week. More postings are much better and will have significant impact on your rankings. Search engines love frequent posts, such as those found in Blogs.

Instead of worrying about algorithms, and (search engine optimization) theories, go back to the basics and boost your rankings with content. Most of us have heard, “Content is King,” and it is totally true.

So what do you say about your business? Tell your established customers and prospects about your service and products. Explain what your unique selling proposition (USP) is. This is what makes you different from similar businesses in your town.

When you have new products, or are looking for feedback about new product development, a is extremely useful. Your customers and prospects can leave you feedback, so marketing research is very .

Lastly, don’t shy away from a “gold mine.” Free advertising is too valuable to ignore. Blogs are the advertising bargain of the decade and possibly, of the 21st century.

What is SEO – And Why Should I Care?

SEO | Posted by admin
Feb 24 2010

What, exactly, is ? Good question. Newer internet marketers, and even some not-so-new to the industry, may be wondering just what means, and how it applies to their own online business. Let’s take a quick overview of and see how you can use it to leverage your own online business.

, or search engine optimization, is a fancy term used to describe the activities used by webmasters to get the search engines to rank their websites higher in the search results. It’s generally known that the top three spots on any search results page will receive the vast majority of the click-through traffic, making those top spots very valuable. The old rule of “location, location, location” holds true for Internet traffic, as well as brick-and-mortar businesses. A top three position on is as valuable as a Rodeo Drive address.

So an entire industry called has been developed to help website owners attain those top search positions. The industry began in the mid-1990’s when YaHoo was born and the concept of keywords was first introduced. Webmasters quickly learned that the search engines looked favorably upon web pages that contained keywords that matched the search phrase being used. In the eyes of the search engines, the more keywords, the more relevant the page must be to the search topic. And thus, the concept of keyword stuffing was born.

By the turn of the century, many of the smaller search engines had fallen out of favor and had emerged as an 800-pound -rilla. At this point, keywords became a little less important to page ranking and more weight was given to the relative “importance” of the site — which was measured by the number of clicks the site received for certain keywords.

These days, both keywords and click-through rates remain part of the search engine equation, but they are not nearly as critical to page rank as proving that your site is “popular” among related sites. While refuses to publish its algorithm for determining search positions (for very good reasons), it is universally understood that page rank depends heavily on the quantity and quality of any inbound web links. Thus, modern day efforts are geared toward building links from high quality sites related to the topic of the subject website.

And how is this done? The options are many and some activities are definitely more effective than others. Some of the more effective solutions include writing a good quality article and asking a high-ranking website to publish it, along with a link back to your website. You can trade links with other websites, but that is not as effective as having one-way links pointing to your site ( can easily see the link pattern and discounts reciprocal links.) You can join blogs and forums that relate to your site, and leave a signature link back to your site.

But all of this activity takes time, and if you own more than one website, it’s very possible that you will need to outsource some, or all, of your work. Your outsourcing options include hiring a specialized company to review your site and implement the necessary activities. This option can be a little pricey and is usually used by only the largest online marketers (think WalMart).

Another option is to hire freelancers to help you identify potential link partners and then contact them for link opportunities. Freelancers can also write articles and posts for you. You can even hire freelancers to research keywords for you.

If you don’t want to manage a subcontractor, you may find that software is your best solution. There are a number of good software programs that will help you identify the most profitable keywords, locate high-authority link partners, and automatically submit your site to search engines.

But once you gain a few good quality links to your website, don’t stop there or your website will gradually stagnate and lose favor with the search engines. Link building is an important ongoing marketing activity for any online business. Hopefully, you now have a better understanding of and how you can use it to attain the best search engine rankings for your website.

Website Design & Hosting Mistakes That Should Be Avoided

Web Design, Web Hosting | Posted by admin
Feb 22 2010

Here are a couple of mistakes that newcomers to the Internet tend to make. See this as a learning opportunity and a way to avoid making these mistakes, since making them will really be detrimental to the success of your website.

There are two types of mistakes that are common:

Technical mistakes and Management mistakes. Let’s take a look at both and how they can be avoided.

Technical mistakes arise from a lack of understanding of the Internet and the technical environment within which the Internet operates. You have to realise that you are working within certain constraints on the Internet – namely hard disk space and bandwidth.

1. Ignoring bandwidth restrictions.

Bandwidth is the most important one that will have an impact. There is a big difference opening a photo or document on your local machine and downloading it from the Internet. If you place photos or documents on your website that are huge it will be very difficult for your visitors to navigate your site and even view your web pages. Pictures especially are the main culprit, since normal text take up very little bandwidth.

All pictures and photos should be optimised for the Internet. A good photo editor program (even the Microsoft Office Picture Manager) is essential to do two things:

a) To scale the picture down so that it can fit onto a web page – pictures should not be larger than 800 pixels or even 1000 pixels wide. Do ensure that you select to retain the ratio when you scale pictures down so that the picture retains the right proportions.

b) To resize the picture physically so that it takes up less physical space. JPG pictures especially can be saved at 60% to 70% compression without the naked eye being able to see it. Use JPG for real life photos with gradual color changes, but rather use GIFs for drawn graphics, sold blocks color and text. Be careful if you use JPG for these since the compression WILL be visible to the naked eye.

2. Cluttering your website with pictures and animations.

Be aware of the latest style in . DO NOT clutter your website with animated gifs such as envelopes posting themselves, rotating animals or any distracting elements. These are very old fashioned in Internet terms by now and instead of attracting or drawing attention, these elements will cause your website visitors to leave – quickly.

3. Using non-standard fonts

Do not use exotic fonts on your website. Each font that you use needs to be installed on each local machine of your website visitor and you have no guarantee that if you are using Acanthus in your , that each and every person in the world that opens that page will also have the Acanthus font installed. The results might be unpredictable, to say the least.

Stick with fonts that are common to most Windows and Mac installations. These are Arial, Tahoma, Verdana, TImes New Roman and Georgia.

4. Not building your website for search engines.

A common error is building a site that ignores search engine needs. The result is that search engines don’t list the site in their search results. Internet browsers don’t learn about the existence of the site and the site stays unknown.

5. Not hosting your site with a provider that is scalable.

A few individuals host sites with companies that are not scalable. The result is that when you have outgrown your current package you cannot upgrade in terms of bandwidth or hard disk space. Scalability is an important criterion to be kept in mind while hosting sites. Otherwise, the site is unable to accept new visitors when the traffic peaks.

Management mistakes arise from a lack of understanding on how to conduct business on the Internet. Conducting business on the Internet is not just a hobby, in fact, if you do not see it as a serious business that is going to consume a lot of your time and resources, your website will fail.

1. Lack of business plan

Make a definite business plan and to stick to it. The business plan should not be abandoned if the business progresses slowly in the beginning. Also, the plan must ensure spending on marketing. You are going to have to market your business as well as market your website if you want to really see a return on your investment. Most businesses make the mistake of depending on the Website to carry all the advertising burden for the business, whereas the actual website actually needs its own marketing budget before it will start to contribute positively to the business.

You must define your target group and invest in advertising which targets them – both offline and online. Patience and persistence are needed, because you may not get immediate results. Networking with family, friends and co-workers also helps. Make yourself visible to the online communities. Avoid spamming, which has a negative effect.

2. Not ensuring that you plan for the lean periods.

You might need the help of your bank or other source that can provide short term capital, advice and resources. You will have to invest in your business and re-invest once you start to have some cashflow. On the Internet (as with any business), things do not happen overnight. It takes time to be successful. Make a budget and keep track of your cash flow. Before you pay yourself a high salary or buy a car, think about whether you can really afford it. Your own business, whether offline and supported by a website, or whether wholly online consumes a lot of time, energy and money and you have to be prepared to invest that in order to be successful in the end.

Discover How to Choose a Domain Name for Your Online Business

Domain Names | Posted by admin
Feb 21 2010

When you start an internet based business there are a few things that you will need initially. Once you have a website you will need to get it registered with a , the other thing you will need is a hosting company to host your website.

In this article we will talk about the importance of choosing a good for your online based business.

A is a product that carries some market value and there are entrepreneurs who actually trade in names as a full time business.

names are bought and sold all the time on the internet on auction sites and the prices of these can vary from cheap to extremely expensive. It all hinges on the perceived value of the name. If you choose your own that has not previously been used, then you can register it for less than $20 a year.

There are two points to consider when choosing your one is branding and the other is keywords.

If you wish to use your own name or the name of your business and market that as a brand then you would build your business around the name rather than around the product. For example when people hear the name they immediately associate it with the internet and a way to search for information they want.

The other way is to use keywords associated with the type of business you wish to run. If your business was selling health products or information on health issues then the keywords that you would choose would have the words health or wellbeing in them and you could choose a incorporating these words, which would help tremendously with getting listed on the search engines. This would be a big help if you are marketing in a particular niche.

When deciding on the , if you want to use keywords then the best thing to do is to write a list of all the possible keyword combination’s associated with your niche and do a keyword search to help you decide on the best ones.

Once that is done then choose a name around those words. By using this method, you are giving a very clear indication to anyone searching exactly what your business is all about.

The simplest way to choose name is to do a search. There are free sites that will give you the information and this will help you with the choice.

Another important point is to get a website with a .com extension unless the website is aimed at a particular country then rather get one with an extension that is used only for that country.

Choose a couple of to start as there is always the possibility that the one you have chosen is already taken. Have another choice also with your keywords in it, just in case.

There is always the possibility that the that you originally chose is for sale, but it is usually expensive to buy. It is far better to create a new one which will cost you a few dollars to register.

4 SEO and Social Bookmarking Tips To Get Higher Rankings

SEO | Posted by admin
Feb 17 2010

You can take a couple of simple steps to maximize the effectiveness of a article. In this article we will talk about tips that include social bookmarking your article to improve the results it gives you.

Social bookmarking is defined by Wikipedia as a method for Internet users to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the Internet. If you have ever posted your link to one of your articles with Digg you have social bookmarked it.

Today it’s to bookmark your articles to multiple social directories with one click. For example OnlyWire dot com allows you to join numerous social directories and then bookmark your article by logging into your onlywire account and posting your title, description and tag keywords.

The advantage of doing this is you can quickly develop backlinks to your articles for the search engines and for readers to find. When you write your article and bookmark it you can also help yourself out by utilizing basic search engine optimization techniques.

To keep it simple what you want to do is choose a specific keyword phrase for the article you write about. You increase the odds of ranking higher on the search engines if you target longtail keyword phrases which are phrases of three or more words.

The way to set this up is to include your keyword phrase in the title of your article. You should then also include it in the first and last paragraphs of the article when you publish it.

To place additional emphasis on it you can bold or even underline that keyword phrase. This helps the search engines know exactly what your article is about.

When you go to bookmark the article you want to tag it around that keyword phrase. You should include those again in the title and in the description for additional emphasis.

Search engines are spidering large social directories such as Technorati, StumbleUpon, Digg, Reddit, Simpy and others all of the time. By bookmarking your article in these directories you are creating valuable back links for your .

You are also bringing the search engines to your more regularly. This allows your URL to rank highly for your targeted keyword phrase and possibly settle in on page 1 of .

This is the things that most Internet marketers dream of. A high ranking for a targeted keyword phrase can bring you free traffic on an ongoing basis. It is something anyone can do utilizing social bookmarking and these tips.

SEO Basic Tips For Your Internet Business

SEO | Posted by admin
Feb 16 2010

You would probably work harder at optimizing it for the proper keywords if you knew how much traffic your website could get from search engines. It is amazing how many Internet business owners do not practice basic search engine optimization.

In this article we will talk about a few of the basics any serious Internet business should be following.

1. One mistake people make is they think they need to start from ground zero and either totally overhaul their existing website or get a new one. In reality there are probably many good things about your existing website and some of the pages may have already been spidered by search engines.

For this reason you want to employ a few of the other tips we will talk about with your existing site and not make major changes to it.

2. Define your target audience! Many websites are scattered and appear to have no focus to them. Defining your target audience means knowing exactly who you are aiming at when a person sits down and begins to search keywords on their favorite search engine.

3. Another thing to consider is how fun your website is. When you get visitors to it you want them to stay and browse around on additional pages. Adding graphics, banners, video, audio, polls and so on make it more intereactive which makes it more fun.

4. Target keyword phrases and longtail keyword phrases. If they have less competition you stand a better chance of ranking high for your keyword phrases. Longtail keyword phrases of four, five, or even more words are easier for you to get on page 1 of a search engine for.

These phrases may not bring you as much traffic as the shorter phrases, but over time if you target enough of them you can develop meaningful quality traffic using this strategy. You can build your keyword list by starting at the free keyword search tool here: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal he

5. Make sure your site is set up targeting specific keyword phrases with hyperlinks that your visitors can click on. For this reason you may not want to post affiliate links on your homepage. Before passing them through to an affiliate page always send your visitors to a post or an additional page of your own website.

6. Another thing you should do is develop webpages and posts around the keyword phrases your are building. Include those in the title as well as in the body of any at text you’re posting on the page. Simply put you are trying to let the search engines know what that page is about so they can rank you well for those specific words.

A lot of web pages will find an sitemap useful in improving their performance. stands for “Search Engine Optimization”, the process that aims to create or revise Internet sites so that it can be better found by search engines. The objective of campaigns is to have websites appear in the top listing or first results page of search engines.

Internet search engines, such as and A9, maintain a very large database of Web pages and available files. To do this, they devise a program called a web crawler, or spider. This software automatically and continuously surfs and hunts content in the Web. Pages that the spider finds are retrieved and indexed according to text content, giving more weight to titles and paragraph headers. Spiders never stop navigating the web from page to page, to index the relevant content of the Internet. Besides looking at the text of titles and headers, some programs are able to identify default tags and keep a library of these page keywords or key phrases in the index.

When a user connects to the Internet types a query, which is automatically interpreted as keywords, the search engine scans the saved index and creates a list of web pages that is most appropriate to what the user is searching for.

will use all the combined techniques of keyword analysis, smart code, good content literature, link popularity study and website organization to place the subject web page as high as possible in the list of search results in search engines. Web pages displayed on the top of results pages are assumed to get the most attention, and therefore, opportunity for earnings for web businesses and pages with sponsor links.

Search engines usually return a list of results ranking pages according to the number of Internet sites linked to them. Results can be classified as organic, or sponsored links. Sponsored links are shown prominently because their creators or agents paid the search engine. Sponsored links are the main source of income of search engines. “Organic” search results are the lists of actual results from the engines index and are directly related to the keyword typed in the request.
One of the more effective techniques of is the creation of a well-organized site map in a website. Since the site’s main page and other content are directly linked to a site map, spiders can more easily move through the website, identify the key words of the content, and index these for a search engine. This is where the sitemap helps the website creator or administrator.

Site maps are usually pages filled with links. These are shown as tables or lists, although lists are generally more effective. Writing code for sitemaps is very and simple to format and maintain. These are ideally basic HTML pages with default tags, logical titles and keywords scattered in the Meta description. Introduction areas can contain more of the keywords. The site should have a main heading for every directory.

A simple list layout helps reduce unnecessary tags that might “hide” your keywords. Some spiders give more weight to the following, than text in the normal body of the webpage: heading text, content within link elements, text nearer the top of the page and the text written for a link. Therefore, writing the keywords and links in these areas could somehow move up the web page’s ranking. This goes for sitemaps as well.

Web sites should be designed consistently, so navigation models should follow the flow of the site map. Therefore, the first section in the site map should be the first link in the navigation bar.

In an Sitemap, and most pages, the headings contain title attributes where more key phrases in the site map can be added. Keywords are generally well chosen and written in the body of a webpage. However, in an site map with little text, key words should be added as much as possible. As much as possible, web links should follow web page titles, and must undergo during coding. Care must be exercised not to cram the page with keywords and links, or the page will be interpreted as blatant spamming and not receive any traffic at all.

There is no way to guarantee that a website will be shown in the topmost ranking of “organic” search results for an extended period of time. However, smart and responsible sitemap techniques can be used to place the website high up in the search position. Regular monitoring and adjustment of the Sitemap and search results would ensure that a website is kept near the top ranking and receiving lots of web user traffic.
